Changemaker Principles and Terms

  3. Safer Spaces
  4. Volunteer Terms

The Humane League’s Principles are guidelines we all commit to upholding as we build power to change the world for animals together. Any action, member, or group that does not embody these principles is not a part of The Humane League.

Volunteer Changemakers are just that—people who share their time and take action with The Humane League—making changes to end the abuse of animals raised for food.

You can make a difference by influencing the policies of the world‘s biggest companies, demanding legislation, and empowering others to take action and leave animals off their plates.

Changemaker Principles

WE ARE A MOVEMENT OF CHANGEMAKERS

As Changemakers, we build community through our shared story. Our community empowers others to tell the stories of the abuse suffered by animals raised for food.

Changemakers receive skills training from a THL Field Organizer and Changemaker Captains through exclusive access to THL resources and platforms. In addition, Changemakers can collaborate with other advocates in their community and across the country, strengthening their knowledge and skills in effective animal advocacy. Changemakers will also have opportunities to connect with, learn from, and support others throughout the animal protection movement and other ally movements.

WE ARE INCLUSIVE

We actively strive to promote and recognize principles of fairness and equity in relation to race, age, color, disability, faith, religion, ancestry, national origin, citizenship, sex, sexual orientation, social class, economic class, ethnicity, gender identity, gender expression, and all other identities represented in our organization and worldwide.

Our work to create spaces where all individuals feel safe and comfortable is exactly that—work. We acknowledge that creating safer spaces is an ongoing process—one that requires attention, intention, effort, and evolving approaches. What we aim for, continually, is safer spaces, and we recognize that our work is not yet done. We invite feedback on how to create safer spaces for all individuals.

WE ARE INNOVATIVE

Changemakers work hard to find practical solutions to difficult problems. We constantly seek opportunities to improve, creating forward-thinking strategies and solutions to grow as a team and a movement.

The animal agriculture industry is massive and benefits from the status quo. By overcoming barriers, we can take more action and build relationships, gaining more people power to reach our mission.

WE HAVE A CULTURE OF FEEDBACK

Giving and receiving feedback is an essential part of the culture at The Humane League. We strive to tell each other in caring, non-judgmental language when work falls short or we disagree.

When you need clarification or have a question, ask! Suppose we can consistently confront the gap between where we are and where we ought to be. In that case we can all grow as individuals, an organization, and a movement.

WE REPRESENT OURSELVES AND THE HUMANE LEAGUE

As a Changemaker, you will have many opportunities to represent THL—at events, tabling fairs, online, and more. When doing so, you are expected to uphold these principles and the Volunteer Terms.

There are also times when you cannot represent THL. As a tax-exempt organization, THL may not participate in political campaigns. We also require that Changemakers undergo media training before engaging with the media. On social media, use a disclaimer stating, “The views and opinions I express here are my own.” These parameters are outlined in the Volunteer Terms. You can talk with your Field Organizer whenever you have questions.

WE ARE RELENTLESS

We are an indomitable force—with an unwavering commitment to our mission and endless determination to succeed. We know that ending the abuse of animals raised for food is a marathon rather than a sprint.

Our relentless mindset is balanced by knowing that rest is essential to keeping this important movement thriving for the long haul.
